44. A discussion on decompression theory, Diving Against Debris, and Your Next Dive takes you to Cayman Brac

Decompression theory is the study and modeling of how inert gas gets from our lungs to our body and then how it is released from our body. All decompression models have evolved from the work by John Scott Haldane. Haldane introduced the concept of tissue compartments that take on nitrogen at different rates called half-times. This work was done in the early 1900s. In the mid-1960s, Dr. Robert Workman developed m-values or absolute inert gas pressure that a tissue compartment can take without presenting symptoms of decompression sickness. Half-times and m-values are used to develop the algorithms in your dive tables or dive computer.

The PADI Dive Against Debris Specialty course is a fun and rewarding course. In this course you will learn about marine debris, where it comes from and what we can do about it. You also learn how to conduct and record a dive against debris survey. Once you conduct your dive and pull out the trash from underwater you follow the five survey steps – weigh, sort, record, dispose and report. It is a great way to dive with a purpose and make every dive a dive against debris

The Cayman Brac Beach Resort is located on the western end of Cayman Brac close to the airport and is part of the Clearly Cayman Dive Resort collective owned by the Tibbets family. The resort has 40 rooms that were completely rebuilt by 2015. The all-inclusive meal plan is outstanding. Reef Divers operates 4 Newton dive boats. There are approximately 70 named dive sites. Many of the sites are on the western end of the island making for short boat rides. You normally get to do a two dive excursion to Little Cayman’s Bloody Bay Wall. You will also get to dive the signature wreck on Cayman Brac – the MV Captain Keith Tibbets.
